Diabolic: Excisions of exorcisms

08/11/10  ||  Daemonomania

Not that you care, but I’ll tell you how I got this album. I was chilling with my homies at the MDF this year, searching the merch region for some metal deals in which to indulge. And a deal was being offered at the ole Deathgasm Records table – buy three CDs and get a discount. Well I picked up Nominion’s new one (disappointment), Officium Triste’s new one (disappointment), and couldn’t quite find a third disc to complete the trifecta. Turns out the big long-haired Floridian behind the table is one of the Diabolic dudes, and is in the midst of giving some poor kid the hard sell on buying his album. Figuring I couldn’t go wrong with a man that literally stands behind his product, I purchased it.

Wish I had done a bit more research on Diabolic before buying it. Maybe the positive mental association between the band name and good things tricked my metal-dar. Anyway, disappointment part III. To make it short and sweet, “Sexcisions of sexorcisms” is Deicide-style DM done the old way. No frills. Very little excitement. When the band decides to slow it down mild boners arise from ze riffheap and songwriting backwaters. But for the most part we’re dealing with fast thrashiness, whammy bar solos, generic vocals, no bass, and absofuckenlutely nothing you haven’t heard before. Done better by Benton and friends (back in the day), Monstrosity, Divine Empire, even Cannibal Cornpone.

Yep, much to my dismay the third tier section of the DM collection which needs a vivisection becomes a larger selection. “Bloodwashed” has a good bit in there. “False belief” is slow and solid. “Entombed” kicks it pretty hard. The last riff in “Fragmented kreation” sounds like something off of “Rise to power”. The outro is long and annoying. I think we’re done here. Up the songwriting to match your instrumental chops, Diabolic, and then you’ll come up with something you can sell with pride.
